National NHS inpatient survey 2009 -From the Picker Institute

The Picker Institute will be offering the national inpatient survey this September, providing trusts the opportunity to monitor progress and benchmark their services against the last six such surveys. Frequent Feedback model showcased at key HSJ event & Frequent Feedback Learning Network launched

The Picker Institute and Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust jointly presented their work on developing near real-time patient feedback at the HSJ Measuring Patients Experience conference on 29th April in London. Acting Chief Executive, Caroline Powell and Julia Barton, Associate Director of Nursing at Southampton, detailed the principles and benefits of the Picker Institute’s Frequent Feedback service which they co-developed and is now in action at 12 NHS trusts. NHS trusts who commission the Picker Institute’s Frequent Feedback service can now participate in a learning network, which held its first meeting on 23rd April. Project leads from acute, mental health and primary care trusts across England discussed their experiences of gathering and using near real-time feedback from patients, carers and visitors. Exploring the Experience of Seldom Heard People Affected by COPD

The Picker Institute was asked to undertake research with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients and their carers on behalf of the Department of Health, as part of the development of its National Service Framework. Using focus groups and interviews, the project sought to explore the views of minority ethnic patients in order to establish whether their experience and understanding of their condition was markedly different to that of the majority white population. The Impact of Globalisation on the NHS

Angela Coulter, Chief Executive of the Picker Institute, co-authored a paper debated at the NHS Confederation’s annual conference from 18th to 20th June in Manchester. The paper, entitled, ‘Globalisation: How will it affect the NHS?’ examined what the NHS needs to do to be better prepared for some of the challenges – and opportunities – globalisation will bring.
