Examples from the Productive Ward
Patients at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) are benefiting from an obvious and demonstrable improvement in care as a result of ward teams’ implementation of a structured and targeted improvement programme. The work focuses on improving processes and environments by changing behaviour and culture to help nurses and therapists spend more time on patient care thereby improving safety and efficiency. The work uses a combination of lean methodology developed in manufacturing, and social marketing which uses marketing principles to influence behaviour change and have a long term impact on organisational culture. See some real examples of this work from LTHT here. These slides were first presented at the January session of the Service Redesign Network, find out more about the network here.

Institue of Innovation & Improvement Developing The Productive Community Series
The NHS Institute is setting up a NHS-wide Productive Community Services programme. It will be a partnership with NHS providers of community health services. The current estimated completion date is Summer 2009.
The aim of the Productive Community series is to produce a set of improvement tools and approaches that release time for clinical staff to care and release time for leaders to lead by improving the basic ways we organise and manage our work whilst improving quality, safety and patient experience. The tools will be flexible so that:
Local providers of community health services can adopt and adapt them to help accelerate the pace of change and get results for patients and staff
Local commissioners can utilise them to encourage best practice in community health pathways.
Find out more about the Productive Community and other Productive Series Programmes here.
