The findings of this research study on changing management cultures and organisational performance in the NHS have now been published. The study was commissioned by the National Institute for Health Research and involved the collection of data from all acute and PCTs in England. The aims of the study were to understand the nature and dynamics of culture change in the NHS, with a particular emphasis on how organisational culture links to health care performance.

Making Successful Applications to the Research for Patient Benefit
The West Yorkshire arm of The NIHR Research Design Service for Yorkshire and the Humber (based at The University of Leeds) will be offering a programme of learning events FREE to NHS researchers and others working in partnership with the NHS within West Yorkshire. These events are aimed at researchers who are developing an application to a suitable funding body, particularly Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) and all other NIHR research programmes.
On Monday, 13 July 2009, the RDS will be running the above learning event which is aimed at NHS and HSR researchers who want to submit a research proposal to the NIHR RfPB Programme for funding. Ideally participants should have a research idea that they wish to develop further.
The learning event will have four short presentations, each followed by a question and answer session. It will end with the opportunity for one-to-one discussions with presenters.
The four presentations will include:
An introduction to the NIHR RfPB programme
What makes a good grant application, an insider’s view?
An introduction to Patient and Public Involvement (PPI)
Comprehensive Local Research Network (CLRN) involvement

Call for Proposals - i4i Future Product Development Funding Stream 3a
The NIHR's Invention for Innovation (i4i) programme would like to invite submissions of proposals to its Future Product Development 3a funding stream (FPD3a). Proposals must include collaboration between at least one industry and one research (academic or clinical) partner to determine the commercial viability of a proposed device or technology, with the development of a robust route to market and a strong, appropriate consortia being the main deliverables. Serving primarily as the first stage of a full collaborative applied research project, total project costs can be no more than £100K in total, of which 75% funding is available.
All applications must show innovation and must have relevance, impact and potential to contribute to future health gain for patients and the general population. This programme is open to research providers in the academic, NHS communities and industry across the UK. Click here for further information or to apply. NIHR Clinical Academic Training Pathway for Nurses, Midwives
The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the Chief Nursing Officer for England are pleased to announce the launch of the NIHR Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship scheme.
The NIHR Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship (NIHR C-DRF) is aimed at graduate (post-degree) nurses, midwives and allied health professionals sited in England who have at least 1 year’s experience of clinical practice since graduating; have had sufficient research experience or research training to prepare them to undertake a PhD; and wish to obtain a PhD by research whilst still developing their clinical skills. RDInfo website - A tool for Health & Social Care Researches
RDInfo is a NIHR funded programme tasked with provided details of funding, learning and advice to health and social care researchers. The service is free to use and the website has RSS Feeds, its own blog, facility for individuals to register their areas of interest and receive weekly email updates.

Falls Research Findings
This research demonstrated that being unable to get up was common, with 15% of falls leaving people lying for more than an hour, often despite access to call alarms. Severe cognitive impairment was the only predictor of prolonged time on the floor. Read the full report here. (BMJ 2008;337:a2227)

Research Evaluation and Development (READ) Lunchtime Seminars
The PCT research practitioners have organised a series of lunchtime meetings which will provide a forum for staff to share learning from any recent findings they may have identified as a result of completing a post graduate dissertation (both research and literature review); evaluations of new ways of working or new services they may have been involved with; or any proposals they are developing (research or evaluation) – where peer feedback may be helpful. The meetings will all take place between 12 and 2pm (talks from 12.30 prompt), the dates and venues are: October 1st - Beeston Hill Health Centre (room BF44); November 5th - Armley Moor Health Centre - Meeting room; December 3rd - Woodsley Health Centre – Health Education room. NIHR Comprehensive Clinical Research Network
A new network is being launched in Leicester to support and develop clinical research in the region. The network, hosted by Leicester's hospitals, is one of the first of the 25 National Institute for Health Research comprehensive local research networks, which will provide support for conducting clinical research in the NHS in England.
