A New Website to Improve Services for Older People
This new website will help public sector staff to better understand the needs of older people. The website launched on Older People's Day (1 October) will help professionals to tailor their work so older people have greater choice and control over the support they receive. The website is part of the government's Independent Living Strategy. This new resource was developed by the Office for Disability Issues, working with the Centre for Policy on Ageing and the National Development Team for Inclusion. Click here to view the website.

Working with Older Prisoners
The Nacro and Department of Health Working with Older Prisoners pack was created so that peer support workers, disability liaison officers, older offender and wing officers could use its contents to implement good practice ideas and set up activities in their establishments for older prisoners. It is also intended to act as a useful reference on different organisations to encourage prison workers to contact other agencies for information and improve the quality of their information, advice and guidance service for older prisoners. The pack should also be used to raise awareness among colleagues of the health problems the older prisoner population is prone to and of some of the practical things they can do to make their lives easier.
Each pack consists of a Resource Pack full of information, a Workshop Pack, which will show readers how to run awareness sessions on the issues facing older prisoners and four identical resources and activities discs, packed full of leaflets from well known organisations who have an interest in this population. Click here for further information.

Reforming Care and Support: Learning from Japan
Counsel and Care the national charity, working with older people, their families and carers for the best care and support, calls for a care debate that recognises the global impact of an ageing population. The Government's forthcoming green paper on the future of care and support in England must look at how care for older people has been successfully reformed in other countries if it is going to have a real impact in the long term. Japan has the world's fastest ageing population, highest life expectancies (79 years for men and 85.8 for women in 2006 and a declining birthrate. The Japanese government's implementation of a national long-term care insurance system has ensured all Japanese older people get the care and support they need, despite the demographic timebomb. This experience should inform England's own long-awaited reform of social care. Read the full report from Counsel & Care here.
