Passion for Life - invitation to participate in a free workshop
This is an exciting opportunity to participate in a workshop being led by the Jönköping Community, Sweden in partnership with NHS Doncaster and Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council.
Jönköping County Council is often referred to as the highest performing health community in the world. In the early 1990’s their performance against a basket of national quality indicators in Sweden was unremarkable and they were significantly financially challenged. Since then, the Jönköping community has focused on improving the health and healthcare of their population through the rigorous application of quality improvement programmes. They are now consistently rated as the top performing county council in Sweden against 11 national quality metrics and lowest but one for the costs of health care.
Passion for Life is an excellent example of the work of the Jönköping Community. The programme focuses on empowering over 65 year olds (seniors) with the knowledge and skills to be able to systematically make small changes in their daily behaviours and routines to enable them to live a happier, healthier, longer life.
The programme offers training to volunteers around 4 key areas;
– food and drink,
– physical activity
– safety at home
– social networks.
With training and support, the volunteers deliver Passion for Life messages to groups of seniors in their own communities. The idea is that people from those groups will also want to become volunteers in delivering Passion for Life to other groups and so the message spreads. Passion for Life has been successfully rolled out in Sweden and has transferred equally successfully to the USA. NHS Doncaster is seeking to become the first pilot site in the UK.
The NHS Doncaster programme is being launched on 8th September at the Keep Moat Stadium in Doncaster. The launch event is both for seniors to find out about the programme and for professionals involved in promoting the health and well being of older people.
Seniors and colleagues from across NHS Yorkshire and the Humber are welcome to participate in the day and are encouraged to consider introducing the programmes in their communities too. The event is free to attend. To register to attend the event or to find out more please contact Elaine.thompson@doncasterpct.nhs.uk or on 01302 566031.

Partners in Care - A Training Package for Involving Families in Dementia Care Homes
Following admission to a care home, family and friends may feel uncertain as to how they now 'fit in' to their loved one's life. This training package, comprising a booklet and DVD, is designed to encourage family participation in the care home and develop a constructive partnership between staff in care homes, families and people with dementia.
The DVD and booklet provide material for four separate training sessions for use by mixed groups of relatives and care home staff. Each session explores a different theme: sharing information, sharing the care, developing supportive relationships and making it work. With a clear and flexible layout, group exercises and notes for the facilitator, this training package will enable professionals and relatives to develop positive and fulfilling ways of working together and improve the level of care for those with dementia. Click here to order your copy.

Breakthrough to real change in local healthcare: a guide for applications to create Health Innovation and Education Clusters (HIECs)
The Department of Health is investing £10 million in the introduction of Health Innovation and Education Clusters (HIECs) across England. HIECs will be partnerships between NHS, higher education, industry and other public and private sector organisations. They will support the spread and adoption of innovation locally and strengthen professional education and training.
This guide describes the vision for HIECs, the role of HIECs in education and training, how HIECs will support innovation and the application process. This starts a period of informal dialogue with strategic health authorities (SHAs) and prospective HIEC partners, leading to expressions of interest in early September 2009 and a final announcement on the first wave of HIECs in December 2009. SHAs are co-ordinating applications and, as part of the process, they are arranging regional stakeholder events.

HR in practice: Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust gets staff plugged into MP3 players for training
The players look like iPod Nanos and staff can hook them up to their laptop or a hospital computer through a USB cable. The computers, in turn, link to the organisational development department of the trust.
Staff can then listen through headphones to the training materials and use the navigation on the device to move on to the next section, or can watch mini-documentaries on the computer that back up the listening material. This allows staff learn at times that are convenient to them and their employer, and the organisation saves thousands of hours, as staff do not need to take time out to train other staff, thus the organisation saves money by ensuring working hours are optimised. There is 100% accountability as a complete audit trail is provided and modules can be remotely updated. Click here to read more...

Innovation Practitioner Programme Survey
The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement has developed a suite of innovation products and is considering consolidating these into a coherent package which would support innovation for improvement within the NHS. Current plans are to deliver this through an Innovation Practitioner Programme. In order to design a truly useful and relevant programme for the NHS we would value your opinion and would be most grateful if you could spare a few minutes to answer a few questions on the subject in a quick online survey.
The online survey will take only 5 minutes to complete access it here!

Independent advocacy qualifications
These qualifications have been developed by the Department of Health in partnership with City & Guilds and the Welsh Assembly Government. They have been endorsed by Skills for Care and Development and Skills for Health and are about to be accredited by QCA. The qualifications have been developed to achieve quality and consistency in advocacy training. The introduction of two new forms of statutory advocacy – Independent Mental Capacity Advocates and Independent Mental Health Advocates – signalled the need for greater focus on quality and consistency across the advocacy sector.
