Listen to an audio recording of the Author in the Room call on preventing falls

In one of the most widely attended Author in the Room calls ever in the joint IHI and JAMA audio series, gerontology pioneer and MacArthur Foundation Fellow, Dr. Mary Tinetti, of the Yale University School of Medicine, shared her newest findings on preventing falls among the elderly. BGS Falls and Postural Stability International Conference: 7 September 2009

This one-day event will bring together experts in this field to share their knowledge and research findings with all those with a special interest in falls and mobility issues. International speakers will deliver lectures on topics ranging from falls prevention in care homes to the medical assessment and management of fallers and how to manage dizzy patients. These talks will be complemented by workshops covering orthogeriatrics, osteoporosis, occupational therapy tools, the Otago Home Exercise Programme and a session on teaching getting up from the floor.

Falls Research Findings

This research demonstrated that being unable to get up was common, with 15% of falls leaving people lying for more than an hour, often despite access to call alarms. Severe cognitive impairment was the only predictor of prolonged time on the floor. Read the full report here. (BMJ 2008;337:a2227)
