Its contents include: what it is; how older people can find out more information; obtaining palliative care for non-English speakers; and how older people can obtain palliative care in either a hospice or in their own home. Leeds Palliative Care Education and Training Events

Training and education sessions are being provided for those staff who provide Palliative Care within Leeds.
For those staff required to train or deliver presentations to others and where it is identified in their job description or Personal Development Plan. A train the trainer session has been organised which will provide and develop the underpinning; knowledge, skills and confidence to effectively design, plan, deliver and evaluate a presentation to a target audience.
There will also be a clinical supervision training for specialist palliatvie care practitioners which will enable clinicians to develop and enhance supervisory skills used to give and receive effective Clinical Supervision.
Finally a Palliative Care Advanced Study Day for Staff Nurses will be held on 12th February which is designed for staff nurses who have previously attended a basic staff nurse study day or have 3 years experience in oncology or palliative care.

Pain and Pain Management courses

Three courses covering pain and pain management, have been developed with the support of educational grants from Help the Hospices and Napp Pharmaceuticals Limited in the UK and authored by Bob Becker. Bob holds a Senior Lecturer in Palliative Care joint teaching appointment between Staffordshire University Faculty of Health and the Severn Hospice in Shropshire.
The three courses are:
- Pain 1 : The Nature of Pain and Suffering
- Pain 2 : The Assessment of Pain
- Pain 3 : The Management of Pain

Leeds Palliative Care Training Directory

The Leeds Palliative Care Training Directory has been developed to provide details of palliative care education and training across organisations in Leeds.

The directory includes courses and events that can be accessed by; NHS Leeds, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, St Gemma’s and Sue Ryder Wheatfield’s Hospices, Leeds Adult Social Services and Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust Staff.

New Leeds Palliative Care Website.

The new Palliative Care Website has been developed by Marie Curie Delivering Choice and NHS Leeds in conjunction with their stakeholders: St Gemma’s, Sue Ryder Care Wheatfields Hospice, Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, LTHT and Leeds City Council.

The site is aimed at Patients, Carers and Staff, and offers advice, contact information and guidance.

First CancerNursing.org live online lecture: 'Cancer and Palliative Care Competencies'

On 10th June at 10am BST CancerNursing.org will be delivering a free ONLINE lecture for nurses. This will be the first in a series of lectures on cancer and palliative nursing topics. The title of the lecture is 'Cancer and Palliative Care Competencies: Empowering or Constraining?'. It will explore the development of competencies in the context of cancer and palliative care and will provide a critical overview of how they fit in to clinical practise and can be used to good effect to help develop knowledge and skills and to plan professional development activities. The lecture will be recorded and a downloadable version will be available on the CancerNursing.org website. Access the presentation here (recorded version did not work this time).

End of Life Care DVD

The National EoLC Programme has produced a new 10-minute DVD, narrated by ITN reporter Helen Wright, explaining the importance of good end of life care. Aimed at health and social care professionals, the DVD was released last month and is available by emailing information@eolc.nhs.uk. Read more about improving end of life care for adults.
