The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement has asked the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) to carry out research to find out whether people working in the NHS would be in favour of development of an online 'ideas channel' to facilitate the sharing of ideas and good practices. As part of this work IES is conducting an online survey to help understand staff views about this. Click here for further information and to take part in the survey!

New DH guidance on substance misuse published

Until now there has been no formal guidance to help clinicians to manage substance dependence among young people. This has left practitioners concerned that their practice may not accord with the developing evidence base. A new guidance document, published by the Department of Health, describes good practice on the best ways to manage a clinically complex condition.

Do you know any good technologies for the NHS?

The NHS Technology Adoption Centre (NTAC) has launched its second Call for Proposals for Technology Implementation Projects. NTAC would like to receive applications from healthcare clinicians and medical technology companies concerning technologies that might be suitable for 4 Projects to begin in Autumn 2009.
These Projects will involve approved technologies being implemented in real-time NHS clinical settings to see the range of issues associated with adopting and using the technologies. These Projects will also identify where additional changes to a clinical pathway or service may need to be made to unlock the full benefit of the technologies. Where technology adoption is successful, online technology adoption guides ("How to, Why to Guides") will be disseminated widely across the NHS to stimulate uptake. The deadline for electronic applications is 5 pm, 2 March 2009. Click here for further information.

Undressing the Elephant: why good practice doesn't spread in healthcare

The premise of this book is that the concept of “spread” and the business of “spreading good practice” as we continue to apply it in healthcare, may be a large part of why “spread” doesn’t happen. If you’re looking for an alternative and occasionally irreverent view, then read on. This is Sarah Fraser's personal account reflecting on many years worth of consulting practice, mistakes included. Copy to be available through the PCT library.
