New NHS Scotland 'knowledge bank' launched

An online database that will allow NHS staff to share information has been unveiled by Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon.
The Knowledge Network will include a "Google-style" search engine with access to a huge bank of educational resources as well as personal space for employees to gather information.
The network will be managed by NHS Education for Scotland (NES).

NHS Evidence - innovation and improvement

NHS Evidence - innovation and improvement will be officially launched at The King's Fund Annual Conference on 24 November 2009. The aim of the specialist collection is to provide timely and efficient access to high quality information resources for those involved in the innovation and improvement of health and social care services. Content covers both theory and practice and includes best available evidence, tools and techniques, measurement, case-studies and policy on all aspects of innovation and improvement.

The innovation and improvement specialist collection, commissioned by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and managed by The King's Fund Information and Library Service, is one of over 30 specialist collections from NHS Evidence. Feedback or comments are welcomed, and contact details can be found on the innovation and improvement specialist collection homepage. Suggestions for resources can also be made by using the submit a document page.

Feedback from E Health Insider Live 2009

Some 1,300 people converged on The ICC in Birmingham for E-Health Insider Live ’09. The chair of Dr Foster Intelligence, Tim Kelsey, was the first keynote speaker at E-Health Insider Live ’09. In his speech, he called for sharing information in the NHS to be made mandatory – particularly for primary care trusts. NHS Evidence - commissioning

The commissioning specialist collection (CSC), part of NHS Evidence and managed by The King’s Fund, is an information resource for all those involved in commissioning for health and wellbeing. It endeavours to include the best available evidence, examples of good practice, policy and data to support world class commissioning and is managed by a dedicated information specialist who is contactable via email should you have any feedback, suggestions or queries.

Highlights of the collection include the regularly updated key topics which provide brief summaries and links to information on various commissioning topics, and the CSC is always happy to consider suggestions for new topics. You can also find links to commissioning related events, data sources, journals and toolkits.

You can keep up to date with the latest commissioning publications via various RSS feeds, or follow and interact with the CSC on Twitter.

Indicators for Quality Improvement now on NHS Information Centre Website

Phase two Indicators for Quality Improvement have now been released through the NHS Information Centre website. Around three quarters of the indicators have now been populated with the latest data, to bring together information that clinical teams can use to improve quality in one easily accessible place.
The indicators have been developed by the NHS Information Centre and Department of Health, to support the vision of High Quality Care for All. They will help NHS professionals improve the quality of care they deliver to patients, and will also support providers and commissioners of NHS services.

The results of the GP Patient Survey run between January and April 2009 have now been published.
In order to help with access to the results of the survey a separate website has been provided for the results to be shown online.
The GP Patient Survey Results website is designed to help people find additional information about the GP Patient Survey and view the final results of the survey run between January and April 2009. It also has links to data published from previous waves of the survey.

Mental Capacity Act Website Launched

Social Care Institute for Execllence has launched two new websites to support workers, carers, researchers and lawyers who are empowered to make decisions on behalf of someone else. The first is called Mental Capacity Act (MCA) Resource and is intended to be the first port of call for those wanting to know more in relation to the Mental Capacity Act. The second website is the Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy (IMCA) Resource is a one stop shop for information on independant mental capacity advocacy.

NHS Evidence website - now live!

The NHS Evidence website is now live. NHS Evidence includes a simple search box, but also has a "tab" at the top of the page to "conduct a specialist search". When you click on this tab, it shows links to the electronic journals and books, healthcare databases, specialist libraries and Athens account information. Access to these is currently still from the familiar National Library for Health access points.
The old National Library for Health page is still live and functional, the only real change being the colour and the change of name "Health information resources – formerly National Library for Health".

PSINetwork Health and Well Being Day 25th June 2009

PSINetwork is holding a health and well being day at St. Chad’s Parish Centre between 10am and 3pm on 25th June 2009. The aim of the day is to have fun while having the opportunity to have a medical check or two, learn some relaxation techniques, try some chair-based exercise and collect information about health and health related issues. Frequent Feedback model showcased at key HSJ event & Frequent Feedback Learning Network launched

The Picker Institute and Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust jointly presented their work on developing near real-time patient feedback at the HSJ Measuring Patients Experience conference on 29th April in London. Acting Chief Executive, Caroline Powell and Julia Barton, Associate Director of Nursing at Southampton, detailed the principles and benefits of the Picker Institute’s Frequent Feedback service which they co-developed and is now in action at 12 NHS trusts. NHS trusts who commission the Picker Institute’s Frequent Feedback service can now participate in a learning network, which held its first meeting on 23rd April. Project leads from acute, mental health and primary care trusts across England discussed their experiences of gathering and using near real-time feedback from patients, carers and visitors. NHS Technology Adoption Centre (NTAC) launches “How to, Why to Guide"

The NHS Technology Adoption Centre (NTAC) has launched its first “How to, Why to Guide” which outlines how to successfully implement specific innovative technologies into NHS organisations. Information in these guides is based on real experiences of implementing technologies in the NHS. The tools and resources provided are designed to save clinicians and managers time, improve performance and provide patients with a better experience.
The first guide is for a new urological surgical technique for the Seldinger Suprapubic Catheter (SPC) and further guides will be launched in the coming months including 12 Lead ECG in Primary Care using Telemedicine and Non Invasive Bladder Analysis for Men

Self Management of Long-Term Conditions Sub-group

The aims of the Self Management Long Term Conditions sub-group is to provide a mechanism for sharing experience, ideas, knowledge and best practice amongst those with an interest in promoting self-management in service delivery as well as acting as means for signposting members to relevant events and information.
The subgroup seeks to build a network that is broad so that members from a range of backgrounds will be able to contribute their unique perspective on the issues affecting self management within health and social care provision. It is anticipated that membership should derive from all care sectors, including voluntary and independent groups.

Learning to Manage Health Information: a conference for clinical educators

Learning to Manage Health Information is a FREE conference open for all educators and others interested in enabling students to utilise health information and technology effectively to enhance the quality of patient care and patient safety. The conference will provide you with the tools and ideas for bringing informatics competency into your programmes of learning.
The conference is a unique chance to meet others interested in this area, both educators and clinicians across all professions. You will find examples of good practice and be able to talk with people who can help support the embedding of informatics into clinical education programmes.
