Speaker Presentations from NHS Centre for Involvement's Summer Conference 2009

The NHS Centre for Involvement's 2009 Summer Conference was held on 2nd July 2009 at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London. The day conference highlighted the work of the Centre and led the debate on the future of Patient and Public Involvement in health and social care service design and delivery.
With a range of key speakers from health, social and voluntary sectors, the conference explored the current thinking on the state of involvement and what we need to do to drive forward the inclusion of involvement at all levels throughout the NHS and other heath and social care organisations. The NHS Centre for Involvement (NCI) Summer Conference - The Future of Involvement – putting patients at the heart of services.

Held on Thursday 2nd July at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, Westminster, London, the conference will look at The Future of Involvement – Putting Patients at the heart of services. With a key note speech from Joan Saddler, Director of Patient and Public Affairs at The Department of Health, the conference will highlight key questions for policy-makers and practitioners around involvement and its implementation within health and social care services.
Delegates will also be invited to attend the presentation of The Involvement Awards 2009 – an awards scheme which celebrates innovation and imagination in PPI throughout the country.

Further Local Involvement Networks (LINKs) Guides available

The sixteenth and seventeenth Guides in the LINks Guide series are now available.
Guide 16 - ‘Community development’ is designed to help people involved with LINks understand how LINks can contribute to community development around health and well-being. The guide has been developed in collaboration with the NHS Alliance and the Community Development Foundation.
Guide 17 - ‘LINks and Overview and Scrutiny Committees working together’ aims to clarify the
roles of Overview and Scrutiny Committees (OSCs) and Local Involvement LINks within the
framework for patient, service user and public engagement in health and social care and to
provide advice for OSCs and LINks that develops their understanding of their respective and
distinct roles, suggesting ways of joint working as a means of maximising their contribution to
public accountability of health and social care.

Patient and Public Involvement Specialist Library

To support the government’s policy objective of engaging patients and the public, the Patient and Public Involvement Specialist Library (PPISL) has been created.
The Library is part of the National Library for Health, and managed by The King’s Fund. the The resources included are evaluated to ensure they are reliable sources of unbiased, up to date information. Information includes:
• Introduction to Patient and Public Involvement
• Methods for involving various groups
• Courses and materials
• PPI groups and organisations
• RSS Feeds (Really Simple Syndication) - a format for delivering regularly changing content.

Exploring the Experience of Seldom Heard People Affected by COPD

The Picker Institute was asked to undertake research with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients and their carers on behalf of the Department of Health, as part of the development of its National Service Framework. Using focus groups and interviews, the project sought to explore the views of minority ethnic patients in order to establish whether their experience and understanding of their condition was markedly different to that of the majority white population. Our conclusions were that, to a large extent, they are not. To read the report click here.

New Tool to Assess Patient Involvement

The Social Care Institute for Excellence has developed an audit tool to help service providers assess how they involve people in the way they run services. The free tool assesses how actively service users are involved in recruiting new staff, providing training and making decisions about policy. For more details, visit the website.

Launch of New CHAIN Improving Patients' Experience Sub-group

CHAIN, Contact, Help, Advice & Information Network, has established a new sub-group which will focus on Improving patients’ experience and the humanity of care. It is being set up with the support of the King’s Fund’s Point of Care Programme, which aims to improve patients’ and families’ experience of care across the health system. Seminal Report Offers Roadmap for Patient and Family Partnership in Care

Making health care delivery patient- and family-centered is a bedrock principle of quality improvement. IHI presents a seminal report on this subject that evolved from a unique convening of more than 70 experts, led by the Institute for Family-Centered Care (IFCC) and IHI. The report is filled with examples from the field and key recommendations for all stakeholders: hospitals, payers, foundations, corporations, government agencies, groups of people with specific chronic illnesses, and others.
