Survey of access to online information and information sharing within the NHS

The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement has asked the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) to carry out research to find out whether people working in the NHS would be in favour of development of an online 'ideas channel' to facilitate the sharing of ideas and good practices. New NHS Scotland 'knowledge bank' launched

An online database that will allow NHS staff to share information has been unveiled by Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon.
The Knowledge Network will include a "Google-style" search engine with access to a huge bank of educational resources as well as personal space for employees to gather information.
The network will be managed by NHS Education for Scotland (NES).

NHS Institute’s Patient Experience Learning Programme

The NHS Institute’s Patient Experience Learning Programme is now into it’s 5th month, and the Patient Experience Online Network has been launched to support the programme delegates and also those working to improve patient experience in the wider NHS.

The online network offers tools and techniques, the sharing of learning using case studies highlighting best practice, a forum for challenges and solutions and the opportunity to connect to other related networks.

This is phase one of the online network and the site will evolve in response to the needs of those who use it.

Integrated care pilots expansion

Following successes in the original 16 integrated care pilots, the programme has been expanded to encourage and facilitate the sharing of knowledge among a wider range of stakeholders and identify further initiatives. The DH is inviting potential participants to submit their completed self-assessment forms. Further guidance on the submission process is available from the DH website.

Help us help you to breathe more easily

Help shape plans to improve the health and wellbeing of people with COPD and asthma. The Department of Health is developing a national strategy for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in England, working with the British Lung Foundation and Asthma UK. The strategy is due to be launched next year and is designed to help improve patients' health and well-being. The strategy covers better prevention and changing behaviour for those at risk, diagnosis and treatment, through to better care for people with COPD at the end of life. It will also highlight the similarities and differences between the diagnosis and care of COPD and asthma. The views, insight, and experiences of people with COPD and asthma and their carers are needed to ensure that the plans in the strategy meet their needs. IHI Call for Abstracts on quality Improvement or New Patient Initiatives

Does your organisation have quality improvement work or a new patient initiative to share? If so, IHI are eager to hear about your work that led to an improvement. High Volume Care Rapid Improvement Programme national sharing event on 12 October

This national sharing event will evaluate the Rapid Improvement Programme for:
fractured neck of femur hip and knee replacement. Using the NHS Institute’s ‘Focus on:’ documents as a platform, this event intends to share learning and showcase results and findings from 20 NHS trusts on the programme across England. There is no cost to NHS England employees for this event, but places are limited. The event will be held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull. First NHS Hull Membership Conference - 9th JUne 2009

There are just a few places left for the Membership Conference in Hull on 9th June. There will be representation from over 80 NHS trusts with a range of Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) professionals, Membership Managers, Charitable and Voluntary organisations, communications personnel and members represented at the meeting.
It promises to be an excellent arena for the sharing of best practice and an opportunity to listen to some thought-provoking plenary sessions. The keynote speaker is Mark Britnell, Director General of Commissioning, Department of Health.
A key objective of the conference is to ensure that best practice is shared. AFTER the conference has taken place, all relevant papers and reports available will be uploaded at http://www.nhsmembershiphull.co.uk/., plus the presentations and conference documents immediately after the event, but not only that - you are welcome to submit any relevant documents that you would like to share with your colleagues across the UK.

Service Redesign Network - Call for Members

The Service Redesign Network brings together people who are involved in service redesign and improvement across Leeds. The aim of the network is to connect professionals across Leeds to share their experiences and to learn from each other, building up a pool of shared service redesign knowledge. The topic of each session is chosen in advance by the group and generally a member volunteers to lead the session. The sessions are relatively informal in format with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. There is no requirement to attend every session, just those that are of particular interest.

Membership currently includes representatives from NHS Leeds, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, NHS Leeds Community Healthcare, Oakley Medical Practice and Leeds Partnerships Foundation NHS Trust. We are actively looking for new members from other organisations to join the network. Call for case studies on black and ethnic minorities' experience of oral health

The Department of Health's Black and Ethnic Minority and Oral Health Working Group is finalising guidance for PCTs. Examples of good practice are still being sought for inclusion. PCTs with experience of this issue that they are prepared to share are invited to contact the group's chair Ros Hamburger at ros.hamburger@hobtpct.nhs.uk.

The first Leeds Health Stars Awards are now open!

Leeds Health Stars 2009 are your chance to receive well deserved recognition for your achievements and an opportunity to share your experiences with others. The awards, which are open to all staff, teams and organisations involved in the provision and commissioning of NHS health care in Leeds, will share and celebrate excellence in innovation and improvement across the city.
The awards will be short listed by panels of health care professionals. The three short listed entries in each category will then be judged by a second panel of service users, patients and carers who will choose the overall winner.
Short listed entries will showcase their entry with a display at the NHS Leeds AGM in September. A sharing and learning event will also take place with each short listed entry presenting their project to colleagues from across Leeds and beyond. The evening awards ceremony will be held on Thursday 15 October 2009.
The closing date for entries is 19 June 2009. Application support workshops to help you submit a winning entry are taking place throughout May and June, so book you place now.

Self Management of Long-Term Conditions Sub-group

The aims of the Self Management Long Term Conditions sub-group is to provide a mechanism for sharing experience, ideas, knowledge and best practice amongst those with an interest in promoting self-management in service delivery as well as acting as means for signposting members to relevant events and information.
The subgroup seeks to build a network that is broad so that members from a range of backgrounds will be able to contribute their unique perspective on the issues affecting self management within health and social care provision. It is anticipated that membership should derive from all care sectors, including voluntary and independent groups.
