Improving NHS productivity with the Horizon Enterprise Visibility tool

Improving productivity and performance and improving patient care is central to the future of the NHS. As NHS trusts face increasingly austere cost efficiency measures over the coming years, anything that helps them reduce long term cost, increase the efficiency and productivity of clinical staff and improve the quality of patient care can only be welcomed.
At Walsall Hospitals Trust in the Midlands and at London’s Kings College Hospital Foundation Trust, a new display system that gives staff access to real time data showing patient, bed and ward information is having such an effect. Click here to find out more

Consultation on opening up choice of GP practice

A public consultation looking at how to give patients a greater choice over which GP practice they can register with has been launched by health secretary Andy Burnham. The consultation is seeking views on the various options for enabling patients to register with the GP practice that best meets their needs, whether that is a practice near their work, near their child's school or simply a different practice near their home that offers more services or longer opening hours. It also sets out the potential implications for their care when patients opt to register a long way from where they live.
The consultation is looking for responses from a wide range of stakeholders, including GPs, PCTs and patients, and will run until the end of May 2010.

Web-Based Program from IHI: Strategies for Reducing Expenses Without Compromising Care

Organisations often engage in quality improvement because it is seen as the right thing to do. Any financial benefit that results from these improvement efforts is considered a nice bonus but not an expected goal. Furthermore, the structures of most payment systems employed in the industry have made it difficult for providers to experience significant financial benefits from quality improvement. However, given the continued rise in health care spending, coupled with the current state of the economy, a new way of thinking is necessary. Health care administrators and clinicians need to focus on creating efficiency while simultaneously maintaining or improving quality of patient care.To help organisations achieve this goal, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and the Healthcare Financial Management Association are co-sponsoring a three-part executive call series, Strategies for Reducing Expenses Without Compromising Care. This series of three web-based call sessions will help to create a portfolio of work that will systematically identify and eliminate waste, leading to a 1% to 3% savings in operating costs per year.
