NHS Institute’s Patient Experience Learning Programme

The NHS Institute’s Patient Experience Learning Programme is now into it’s 5th month, and the Patient Experience Online Network has been launched to support the programme delegates and also those working to improve patient experience in the wider NHS.

The online network offers tools and techniques, the sharing of learning using case studies highlighting best practice, a forum for challenges and solutions and the opportunity to connect to other related networks.

This is phase one of the online network and the site will evolve in response to the needs of those who use it.

Focus on: Emergency and Urgent Care for Children and Young People - best practice films launched

The NHS Institute has launched a series of 10 case study films focussing on different aspects of whole system working on the emergency and urgent care pathway for children and young people across primary and secondary care (including ambulance services and NHS Direct).
The NHS Institute has been working with 10 health systems nationwide to roll out the best practice set out in the Focus On: Children and Young People Emergency and Urgent Care document.

Bolton Improving Care System Open Day 8 June 2009

The aim of this conference brought to you by Skiils for Health and Skills for Social Care is to showcase examples of innovative new ways or new types of working and look at where health and social care are making a difference to service users by working in partnership. Active Medicine - A case study

Active Medicine was designed to educate and support patients, inform healthcare professionals
and act as a shared care resource during consultations.
The technology behind the project was developed by Dr Howard Last and Dr Stewart Manning after GPs at Oakley Medical practice noticed poor asthma technique in the local area. Many patients failed to turn up for appointments and communication between different healthcare professionals was in need of improvement.The software provides inhaler videos and information about asthma for the patient, while the healthcare professional has access to guidelines and the patient’s previous notes and actions. This helps generate a personalised action plan for the patient who can then access this again, online.

Spirit Possession and Mental Health Conference

Spirit possession is recognised world wide across many cultures and by several religions. Spirit possession is often seen as an idiom of distress causing a change in behaviour and mental well being. Spirit possession is also included in the ICD 10 and DSM IV classifications of mental disorders, yet the extent to which it is recognised and / or discussed in clinical practice is less than we would expect, even in UK cities where there resides a diverse population. This one day event on 29th June 2009, will consider the critical themes and debates on spirit possession from an anthropological, social, psychological, medical and religious perspective using a range of illustrative case study, clinical practice, research and short film presentations. Exciting Opportunity - Call for Case Studies

The Department of Health are calling for case studies which describe the tangible changes to services and successes one year into the implementation of the Next Stage Review. Lord Darzi would like to draw strongly on this work to mark the anniversary of the publication of High Quality Care for All in June. The DH are likely to use the case studies in a variety of media and are looking for an inspiring description of what has been implemented and how this has benefited patients, staff, or the local community. Practical Advice to help Family Doctors Support Carers

The Princess Royal Trust for Carers and the RCGP have teamed up to launch a self-assessment toolkit for Primary Care Teams. It is designed to help them pool knowledge/skills and build on existing good practice; put in place systems for identifying carers at the earliest possible stage; and share good practice with colleagues nationally. It comprises chapters on developing an action plan; case studies; and sources of further information.

Mouth Cancer Action Week

This year’s Mouth Cancer Action Week will run from November 16 -22. Mouth cancer kills one person every five hours in the UK.
This year’s campaign is using the tagline ‘If in doubt, get checked out’ to raise awareness of the importance of early detection. Treated in its early stages mouth cancer is curable but left later it kills around one in two. Real Life Patient Stories - A useful resource for clinicians and Patients

Two new websites have been launched featuring a collection of real life health stories and personal experiences of illness and health.

The two sites, Healthtalkonline, and Youthhealthtalk, have replaced DIPEx, and the new sites include the UK’s largest collection of real life health stories and aim to support individuals who feel isolated as a result of a particular conditions featuring patients talking on videos and on audio clips as well as through transcripts.

All content on the site is based on research carried out by academics from Oxford University from interviews with almost 200 people. The sites are designed to be a useful resource for clinicians who want to better understand people’s perspectives as well as patients.

Integrated care pilot programme - prospectus for potential pilots

The Department of Health is to pilot a new clinically-led models of integrated care.

New patient safety briefing available

The Health Foundation has released an update on the lessons learned from its Safer Patients Initiative. The Health Foundation's Safer Patients Initiative was set up to address this problem and find ways of making hospitals safer for patients. Learning from the initiative has informed the development of the English safety campaign. The briefing focuses on the importance of senior leadership, system change and team working to making hospitals safer.

Year of Healthy Communities Calendar, April 2008 to March 2009

The Year of Healthy Communities Calendar is back. This financial year calendar contains 52 health improvement examples, one for each week of the year. It was produced by the Healthy Communities team, who are sponsored by the Department of Health. The calendar starts with April 2008. At the beginning of every new month four health examples will be showcased on these pages. The calendar emphasises where local authorities, primary care trusts (PCTs) and other services are tackling health inequalities. The six councils awarded beacon status for reducing health inequalities are also featured.

Innovation at Its Best: Medication Reconciliation

As part of IHI’s ongoing efforts to help hospitals eliminate adverse drug events, medication reconciliation was the focus of IHI’s and the 5 Million Lives Campaign's first-ever Innovation Challenge. Hospitals participating in the 5 Million Lives Campaign were invited to share their most effective ideas for implementing a reliable medication reconciliation system. Leading Improvement in Patient Safety

The Safer Care team at the NHS Institute works with NHS trusts to help them gain the passion, confidence and skills to eliminate harm to patients. Last November, 23 trusts signed up to the Leading Improvement in Patient Safety (LIPS) programme, which focuses on building the capacity and capability within hospital teams to improve patient safety. The Service Improvement Team at NHS South West has designed a new on-line Service Improvement tool. Known as the NHS South West Improvement Resource Locator (http://www.swirl.nhs.uk/), it is collating case studies, best practice, tools, techniques, publications and useful websites to share learning and experience.
