From the consulting room on the pareto principle

The pareto principle is more commonly known as the 80/20 rule. It says things like “20% of your patients cause you 80% of your work”.
It's often quoted in management books and advocates of ‘Lean’ and the Toyota production system use it as a mantra to speed up production. The theory is that concentrating on the 80% of stuff that is routine gets you a bigger overall win than concentrating on the 20% that causes you trouble. NHS Institute’s Patient Experience Learning Programme

The NHS Institute’s Patient Experience Learning Programme is now into it’s 5th month, and the Patient Experience Online Network has been launched to support the programme delegates and also those working to improve patient experience in the wider NHS.

The online network offers tools and techniques, the sharing of learning using case studies highlighting best practice, a forum for challenges and solutions and the opportunity to connect to other related networks.

This is phase one of the online network and the site will evolve in response to the needs of those who use it.

Personal Learning for Commissioning: a new resource from PCC

NHS Primary Care Commissioning (PCC) has introduced a new resource to help subscribers develop the expertise needed to support organisational commissioning competencies. Personal Learning for Commissioning (PL4C) provides links to commissioning resources and advice on the skills and knowledge required to bring individuals up to the mark in a range of commissioning disciplines. PL4C also includes tools to help commissioners plan and track their professional development.

Help us help you to breathe more easily

Help shape plans to improve the health and wellbeing of people with COPD and asthma. The Department of Health is developing a national strategy for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in England, working with the British Lung Foundation and Asthma UK. The strategy is due to be launched next year and is designed to help improve patients' health and well-being. The strategy covers better prevention and changing behaviour for those at risk, diagnosis and treatment, through to better care for people with COPD at the end of life. It will also highlight the similarities and differences between the diagnosis and care of COPD and asthma. The views, insight, and experiences of people with COPD and asthma and their carers are needed to ensure that the plans in the strategy meet their needs. Joint Financing Across Health and Social Care - Audit Commission Report

It builds on our previous publication, 'Joint Financing Across Health and Social Care' that explained the practical implications and legislative framework for joint financing.
It considers how these arrangements are used, focusing on learning disability, mental health and older people - areas where service users most often need health and social care.

The Search is on for the Top Ten High Impact Actions for Nursing & Midwifery

A search is on for the Top Ten High Impact Actions for Nursing and Midwifery. NHS Live know that you are likely to be involved in innovative projects that improve the quality of care for patients and reduce costs. If you are a nurse or midwife, NHS Live want you to let your colleagues know about your improvement so that they can do it too! If you aren’t, but you know of some fantastic improvements being made by nursing and midwifery colleagues, please forward this on to them. This is joint initiative by the Department of Health, the Royal College of Midwives, the Royal College of Nursing, the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. It is looking for changes that you have already made within your organisation that have improved quality for patients and reduced costs that, if replicated nationally, would have a huge impact on the quality and cost of patient care. Passion for Life - invitation to participate in a free workshop

This is an exciting opportunity to participate in a workshop being led by the Jönköping Community, Sweden in partnership with NHS Doncaster and Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council.
Jönköping County Council is often referred to as the highest performing health community in the world. In the early 1990’s their performance against a basket of national quality indicators in Sweden was unremarkable and they were significantly financially challenged. Since then, the Jönköping community has focused on improving the health and healthcare of their population through the rigorous application of quality improvement programmes. They are now consistently rated as the top performing county council in Sweden against 11 national quality metrics and lowest but one for the costs of health care.

Passion for Life is an excellent example of the work of the Jönköping Community. The programme focuses on empowering over 65 year olds (seniors) with the knowledge and skills to be able to systematically make small changes in their daily behaviours and routines to enable them to live a happier, healthier, longer life.

The programme offers training to volunteers around 4 key areas;

– food and drink,
– physical activity
– safety at home
– social networks.

With training and support, the volunteers deliver Passion for Life messages to groups of seniors in their own communities. The idea is that people from those groups will also want to become volunteers in delivering Passion for Life to other groups and so the message spreads. Passion for Life has been successfully rolled out in Sweden and has transferred equally successfully to the USA. NHS Doncaster is seeking to become the first pilot site in the UK.

The NHS Doncaster programme is being launched on 8th September at the Keep Moat Stadium in Doncaster. The launch event is both for seniors to find out about the programme and for professionals involved in promoting the health and well being of older people.

Seniors and colleagues from across NHS Yorkshire and the Humber are welcome to participate in the day and are encouraged to consider introducing the programmes in their communities too. High Volume Care Rapid Improvement Programme national sharing event on 12 October

This national sharing event will evaluate the Rapid Improvement Programme for:
fractured neck of femur hip and knee replacement. Using the NHS Institute’s ‘Focus on:’ documents as a platform, this event intends to share learning and showcase results and findings from 20 NHS trusts on the programme across England. There is no cost to NHS England employees for this event, but places are limited. The event will be held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull. Service Redesign Network - Call for Members

The Service Redesign Network brings together people who are involved in service redesign and improvement across Leeds. The aim of the network is to connect professionals across Leeds to share their experiences and to learn from each other, building up a pool of shared service redesign knowledge. The topic of each session is chosen in advance by the group and generally a member volunteers to lead the session. The sessions are relatively informal in format with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. There is no requirement to attend every session, just those that are of particular interest.

Membership currently includes representatives from NHS Leeds, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, NHS Leeds Community Healthcare, Oakley Medical Practice and Leeds Partnerships Foundation NHS Trust. We are actively looking for new members from other organisations to join the network.
