For the last three years, the Improvement Network has been offering free access to a suite of improvement tools to help support the needs of managers. These are accessible to public sector managers and practitioners across health, local government and police sectors. The tools cover a range of 16 topics including communication, change management and partnership working.

Partners in Care - A Training Package for Involving Families in Dementia Care Homes

Following admission to a care home, family and friends may feel uncertain as to how they now 'fit in' to their loved one's life. This training package, comprising a booklet and DVD, is designed to encourage family participation in the care home and develop a constructive partnership between staff in care homes, families and people with dementia.
The DVD and booklet provide material for four separate training sessions for use by mixed groups of relatives and care home staff. Each session explores a different theme: sharing information, sharing the care, developing supportive relationships and making it work. With a clear and flexible layout, group exercises and notes for the facilitator, this training package will enable professionals and relatives to develop positive and fulfilling ways of working together and improve the level of care for those with dementia. Breakthrough to real change in local healthcare: a guide for applications to create Health Innovation and Education Clusters (HIECs)

The Department of Health is investing £10 million in the introduction of Health Innovation and Education Clusters (HIECs) across England. HIECs will be partnerships between NHS, higher education, industry and other public and private sector organisations. They will support the spread and adoption of innovation locally and strengthen professional education and training.
This guide describes the vision for HIECs, the role of HIECs in education and training, how HIECs will support innovation and the application process. This starts a period of informal dialogue with strategic health authorities (SHAs) and prospective HIEC partners, leading to expressions of interest in early September 2009 and a final announcement on the first wave of HIECs in December 2009. SHAs are co-ordinating applications and, as part of the process, they are arranging regional stakeholder events.

Making Successful Applications to the Research for Patient Benefit

The West Yorkshire arm of The NIHR Research Design Service for Yorkshire and the Humber (based at The University of Leeds) will be offering a programme of learning events FREE to NHS researchers and others working in partnership with the NHS within West Yorkshire. These events are aimed at researchers who are developing an application to a suitable funding body, particularly Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) and all other NIHR research programmes.
On Monday, 13 July 2009, the RDS will be running the above learning event which is aimed at NHS and HSR researchers who want to submit a research proposal to the NIHR RfPB Programme for funding. Ideally participants should have a research idea that they wish to develop further.
The learning event will have four short presentations, each followed by a question and answer session. It will end with the opportunity for one-to-one discussions with presenters.
The four presentations will include:
An introduction to the NIHR RfPB programme
What makes a good grant application, an insider’s view?
An introduction to Patient and Public Involvement (PPI)
Comprehensive Local Research Network (CLRN) involvement

Integrated Working in Health and Social Care on 11th & 12th June 2009 in London.

The aim of this conference brought to you by Skiils for Health and Skills for Social Care is to showcase examples of innovative new ways or new types of working and look at where health and social care are making a difference to service users by working in partnership. There will also be opportunities to look at developments in the health or social care sector which have benefited service users from one sector and may provide useful learning for those working in the other sector.

Sustainable Communities Awards Launched

The Sustainable Communities Awards aim to celebrate and reward the critical role councils, primary care trusts and their local partners play in delivering genuinely sustainable communities. This is the 4th year of these awards which have recognised and celebrated some excellent and innovative work across the country where local partnerships are striving to improve environmental, social and economic well-being at the same time. The Care Services Improvement Partnership presents a series of five interactive regional workshops on 'Positive Planning Through Regional Partnership'. The workshops aim to ensure that the housing, care and support needs of vulnerable people are captured at a regional level and inform the relevant regional strategies, and regional/sub-regional commissioning and planning.
