Spending Challenge

The Spending Challenge is an open invitation for public sector workers to contribute to the government’s Spending Review, helping to rethink public services to deliver more for less. It’s open initially to public sector workers between now and July 8th, when it will be opened to the wider public.
The Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister have committed that the government will look at every single idea that comes in. All the suggestions will be considered by a team of officials at the heart of government. The final Spending Review, which will set out detailed spending plans for all government departments, will be published on October 20th.

Survey of access to online information and information sharing within the NHS

The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement has asked the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) to carry out research to find out whether people working in the NHS would be in favour of development of an online 'ideas channel' to facilitate the sharing of ideas and good practices. The pareto principle is more commonly known as the 80/20 rule. It says things like “20% of your patients cause you 80% of your work”.
It's often quoted in management books and advocates of ‘Lean’ and the Toyota production system use it as a mantra to speed up production. The theory is that concentrating on the 80% of stuff that is routine gets you a bigger overall win than concentrating on the 20% that causes you trouble. HealthCom’10 to take place in France

The twelth International Conference on e-Health networking, application and services, HealthCom ’10, will be held in Lyon, France at the beginning of July.
The conference aims to bring together clinicians, hospital administrators, IT professionals, researchers, healthcare system suppliers and consultants from across the world to collaborate, discuss health IT solutions and exchange ideas.

New NHS Scotland 'knowledge bank' launched

An online database that will allow NHS staff to share information has been unveiled by Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon.
The Knowledge Network will include a "Google-style" search engine with access to a huge bank of educational resources as well as personal space for employees to gather information.
The network will be managed by NHS Education for Scotland (NES).

NHS Institute’s Patient Experience Learning Programme

The NHS Institute’s Patient Experience Learning Programme is now into it’s 5th month, and the Patient Experience Online Network has been launched to support the programme delegates and also those working to improve patient experience in the wider NHS.

The online network offers tools and techniques, the sharing of learning using case studies highlighting best practice, a forum for challenges and solutions and the opportunity to connect to other related networks.

This is phase one of the online network and the site will evolve in response to the needs of those who use it.

New guidance for doctors comes into effect on 1 July 2010.
Treatment and Care Towards the End of Life: Good Practice in Decision Making replaces the booklet Withholding and Withdrawing Life-prolonging Treatments (2002). It expands on the guidance in Consent: Patients and Doctors Making Decisions Together, which sets out the principles on which good clinical decisions should be based, and provides a framework for good practice when providing treatment and care for patients who are reaching the end of their lives.

Commissioning children's services network is the latest to join NHS Networks

The Commissioning Children's Services Network is the latest addition to NHS Networks, the virtual platform for connecting professionals and stakeholders in healthcare. The stated aim of the network is to "develop and spread expertise around commissioning children and young people's services". It is the latest of around 20 networks directly related to commissioning to have formed on the NHS Networks platform, which also hosts the World Class Commissioning support and development network and PBC Connection the "network of networks" for PCT and practice based commissioners. NHS Networks provides free web space, network management tools and support for collaboration and intelligence sharing. The service was re-launched in February, supports over 600 networks and is adding new networks at the rate of one a day.

Consultation on opening up choice of GP practice

A public consultation looking at how to give patients a greater choice over which GP practice they can register with has been launched by health secretary Andy Burnham. The consultation is seeking views on the various options for enabling patients to register with the GP practice that best meets their needs, whether that is a practice near their work, near their child's school or simply a different practice near their home that offers more services or longer opening hours. It also sets out the potential implications for their care when patients opt to register a long way from where they live.
The consultation is looking for responses from a wide range of stakeholders, including GPs, PCTs and patients, and will run until the end of May 2010.

NHS Evidence are currently looking for new members to join the NHS Evidence Advisory Committee to replace those whose terms have come to an end.
The Advisory Committee is central to the decision making process for the NHS Evidence Accreditation Scheme, which recognises high standards in the production of guidance. Processes which have reached the highest standards are awarded the NHS Evidence Accreditation Mark, which can be displayed on the relevant guidance as a quality standard.
Applications for committee members are welcomed from enthusiastic individuals with expertise in relevant areas of work such as research and methodology and who are potential users of NHS Evidence services such as clinicians, social care professionals and lay representatives.

New programme for Patient Safety Leaders

The NHS Institute launches a new programme for Patient Safety Leaders on 23 February with another programme planned for September. The programme is delivered through three separate units totalling six days. It equips staff with the passion, confidence and skills to improve patient safety. The aim is to help trusts build the capacity and capability for safety improvement within teams of frontline staff.
The programme is practical and hands on and shows how to use concepts such as Plan, Do, Study Act (PDSA) and the Model for Improvement (MFI.) It includes presentations, interactive discussions and teaching sessions led by leading improvement science specialists from the Safer Care teaching faculty, Warwick University, Professor Jean Penny from Derby University, the wider NHS and elsewhere. Creating a Culture of Innovation in NHS Yorkshire and the Humber

Dr Stephen Lundin’s approach to Innovation - opportunity to participate in a workshop on 22nd January at Leeds Town Hall from 9.30 for 10am-4pm

We are facing the greatest leadership challenge in the history of the NHS – how to significantly increase the pace of quality improvement at the same time as significantly reducing the cost of healthcare. Innovation is key to ensuring our success
To deliver on this challenge we need to create a culture of innovation at every level of the system – in front-line teams, organisations, health communities and at a regional level.
A workshop will be held on Friday 22nd January with an internationally respected innovation leader – Dr Stephen Lundin. Stephen is best known as the author of the multimillion-copy, best-selling FISH books and more recently the best seller CATS: The Nine Lives of Innovation. The premise of CATS is that organisations don’t innovate, people do and it offers both a structure for innovation and a compelling reason to engage in the process. Please see the attached paper for more information.

The aim of the workshop will be to support leaders from across the region in developing a culture of innovation at an organisational, health community and regional level. The workshop will be practical in its approach and will inform the development of action plans to be taken forward by participants through 7, 30 and 90 day challenges..

The workshop will be of interest to a wide range of clinical and managerial leads e.g. service managers, clinical leads, innovation and improvement leads, HR and OD leads and commissioners. To support the implementation of high impact action plans we would encourage more than one attendee from each organisation to participate in the event.

NHS Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Innovation Funds

A Regional Innovation Fund, funded by the Department of Health, is being made available to support innovation and the spread of best practice across the region. The fund consists of £1.94 million in 2009/10 and £5 million a year for the following four years, subject to annual confirmation from the Department of Health.

Applications for funding are invited from NHS clinicians, managers, frontline teams and partners in support of innovation across Yorkshire and the Humber. Help shape plans to improve the health and wellbeing of people with COPD and asthma. The Department of Health is developing a national strategy for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in England, working with the British Lung Foundation and Asthma UK. The strategy is due to be launched next year and is designed to help improve patients' health and well-being. The strategy covers better prevention and changing behaviour for those at risk, diagnosis and treatment, through to better care for people with COPD at the end of life. It will also highlight the similarities and differences between the diagnosis and care of COPD and asthma. The views, insight, and experiences of people with COPD and asthma and their carers are needed to ensure that the plans in the strategy meet their needs. Supporting people to live well

The first national Self Care Awareness Week takes place from the 9 – 15 November 2009 and aims to raise awareness of the information and support available to help people, and especially those with long term conditions take control of their own health and wellbeing.

Self Care covers every aspect of living a healthy life, from brushing our teeth to looking after ourselves when recovering from illness. People with long term conditions are already doing this well but some are still unaware of the choice of support and information available to help manage their condition. For instance, everyone with a long term condition can have a personalised care plan, access to courses and support groups as well as knowing about the right equipment to help live healthy and stay independent.

Activities to support Self Care Week are being held around the country; in addition, charities including Men’s Health Forum are involved in the week to inform people and those with a long term conditions that being able to self care puts you in charge of your own healthcare.

CHAIN members are encouraged to support the campaign and raise awareness locally by displaying the self care week posters in GP practices, writing about the week in newsletters and using the web buttons and banners on both online and offline materials. A New Website to Improve Services for Older People
